Paul defends his faith (4 messages)

By Terry - Posted on 15 January 2010

"There comes a time in every Christian's life when are called upon to give what we call a defence of the faith."

So begins this short series on the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts. Paul was not the only Christian to publicly defend his belief in Christ, nor is Acts the only place we find him doing so. Surely some, if not all, of his epistles must be considered a defence of the gospel.

But late in the book of Acts, Paul was called upon to defend his faith under the most severe conditions on four successive occasions.

Between Acts 23 and 26 Paul stands before four 'courts' to explain himself. First it is the Sanhedrin then Felix, Festus and finally Agrippa. These speeches are some of the most gripping and inspiring writings preserved for us from these early days of the Church.

Then Paul, under incredible pressure, receives a personal visit from the Lord who encourages him to stand firm,

The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome." (Acts 23:11)

It was all part of God's plan to spread the gospel firstly to Caesar and his kingdom and from there to the rest of the world. Everyone of us can be thankful he did.
